Roos<p>🧵🪡 I spent many hours bisecting an update that broke my VM...</p><p>I could no-longer run <a href="https://tooting.ch/tags/COSMICdesktop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>COSMICdesktop</span></a> in <a href="https://tooting.ch/tags/qemu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>qemu</span></a> with a <a href="https://tooting.ch/tags/virtio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>virtio</span></a> GPU using venus to provide hardware acceleration to the guest.</p><p>I finally nailed it down to the guest kernel. The <a href="https://tooting.ch/tags/Mesa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mesa</span></a> docs say you need a **host** with kernel 6.13+ (I'm running 6.14).</p><p>However, I discovered my VM broke when the **guest** kernel was updated from 6.12 to 6.14 🤦. That's very counterintuitive.</p>

Debra Martz<p>"Gloss Mountains View From the Trail" by Debra Martz </p><p>A conflict that continues today is, "What REALLY is the name of this Oklahoma landmark; Gloss or Glass Mountains?"<br>In 1873, the name Glass Mountains appeared on a map issued by the Federal General Land Office. Two years later, the same office issued another map calling them the Gloss Mountains. Perhaps the 2nd draftsman misread an A for an O? <br><a href="https://debra-martz.pixels.com/featured/gloss-mountains-view-from-the-trail-debra-martz.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">debra-martz.pixels.com/feature</span><span class="invisible">d/gloss-mountains-view-from-the-trail-debra-martz.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://photog.social/tags/GlossMountains" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GlossMountains</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/Oklahoma" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Oklahoma</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/RedDirt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RedDirt</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/arid" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>arid</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>landscape</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/mesa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mesa</span></a> <a href="https://photog.social/tags/BuyIntoArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BuyIntoArt</span></a></p>

Fell<p>I just found out that the NVIDIA driver on Linux simply cannot utilise the system RAM when your GPU is running out of VRAM. Allocations will simply fail. </p><p>That fucking sucks.</p><p>Windows is apparently remarkably good at managing video memory, so many games simply rely on that and don't take into account how much VRAM is used or available.</p><p>Seems like AMD's drivers (Mesa) can deal with this, but I'm not sure.</p><p><a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/NVIDIA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NVIDIA</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/RAM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RAM</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/GPU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GPU</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/VRAM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VRAM</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Memory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Memory</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Windows</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/AMD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AMD</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Mesa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mesa</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/LinuxGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LinuxGaming</span></a> <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/GamingOnLinux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GamingOnLinux</span></a></p>
